Tony O’Sullivan Bio
Originally a native of New Zealand, O’Sullivan arrived in New Jersey in 1996 – where he worked for trainer’s Paul Jessop and Ross Croghan; it was the job with Croghan that brought O’Sullivan to Ontario. Once deciding to stay in Ontario, O’Sullivan worked as an assistant trainer to Nat Varty for 2 years and then accepted a position with Mark Harder to manage Harder’s Ontario operation. While with Harder, O’Sullivan had the opportunity to help with the conditioning and campaigning of some memorable horses such as, Rair Earth, Camcracker and Sutter Hanover.
In October 2004, O’Sullivan opened his own public stable – and never looked back…..at least not too often! Now successfully managing and campaigning 2 successful stables, in Ontario and New Jersey – O’Sullivan has established himself among the top trainers in North America. Continuously ranking among the top trainers at Woodbine, O’Sullivan has repeatedly had stable earning over 1 million since opening his doors in 2004. Both 2011 and 2012 were banner years for O’Sullivan, with his stable banking over 3.9 million each year – earning him an O’Brien award nomination for 2011. Stand out campaigners for these years were Alsace Hanover, Maureen Rocks, Dalhousie Dave, Classicrocknroll, Camaes Fellow, Love Canal and Machawish.
Since the 2011 season – O’Sullivan’s stable has continuously earned between 2.5 and 3.5 million yearly – O’Sullivan has over 25 million in lifetime earning and closing in on 1000 lifetime training wins. O’Sullivan certainly does not take all the credit for his access; “my stable would not have the success without my staff, trainers and my owners – I’m constantly communicating with my trainers and in turn my owners; together we make the best decision for each horse to get to the next level.”
